Waiting for break
Nov. 20th, 2007 08:04 pm4 day weekend coming up! All I have to do is survive half a day of school and 2 hours of staff development.
Man, I need this break, as can be witnessed by my goofing-off of late: Read lots of Sandman last night, and spent part of this evening watching videos on http://videojug.com (hilarious British how-to videos) and looking at maps and statistics at http://www.time.com/time/dayinthelife (favorite map: City population shift, day vs. night. Teachers also score a moderate on the "job happiness" chart (36%). Surprising that the happiest job (priests) by this poll is only 67% happy. That means 2/3 priests aren't happy with their jobs, and only 1/3 teachers are happy with their job. I guess we are taught that jobs are generally not designed to be happiness-inducing? (Would I go watch a movie that only got 67% on RottenTomatoes?)
Speaking of RottenTomatoes, I went to watch Beowulf 3D on opening night with Cat, Renee, and my brother. We were aiming for the 7:30 showing, which ended up sold-out, so we watched the 10:20pm showing. It was good. It was a smart action movie. I mean, bloody adrenaline-rushing fights coupled with wry commentary on the nature of stories in a perhaps-honest portrayal of Christianizing Scandanavia. What's not to love? I think I like smart action movies more than smart artsy movies, because it's not trying so hard. A few points of love: ( spoilers if you don't know the original story and Angelina Jolie )
While watching the movie, I was like, "hmm... a movie telling stories but also making meta-commentary about story-telling. How Neil Gaiman". BUT WITH MONSTAHS. IN 3D
Speaking of 3D, the digital animation aspect was much more tolerable in 3D. Things were richer and more dimensioned. Almost like watching a play in some ways, except with DRAGON. It sometimes bothered me that the fabric was more real than the person, but most times it wasn't too noticeable.
One day more! The only thing that would make it better would be getting paid for this month. (Boo teachers getting paid once a month!)
Hmm... my letter to myself is on pg. 224 of the FutureMe book. I sent it to Joanne, and she was entertained.
Other great things in life: shopping at Daiso. I went this weekend and bought 14 cute/functional Japanese things for $24. Including the Cutest Doorstop Ever. Truly a noble replacement for the Hobby Shop at San Antonio Shopping Center. (Although sometimes I still wonder where I'd go to get balsa wood.)
My plans for Thanksgiving weekend:
Wednesday: Work. Come home. Crash. Run errands. (Maybe some grading?) Drive home Wed night
Thursday: Pick up dad at airport in the morning. Paint something. Go to 2 Thanksgiving parties in the evening.
Friday: Drive home, plan and make Thanksgiving dinner for family at apartment. First time all of family come to apartment!! Friday night: relax, draw/knit while watching trashy movies
Saturday: Grade stuff
Sunday: make lesson plans and catch up on school
ETA: Oh, I was checking my bank account, and apparently I had enough money, so I went and got myself the $200 laptop. I want to use it as a classroom laptop for the kids. In the "good question. Why don't you look it up?" way. Which I feel better about with that sort of laptop than with my $2000 school laptop (which I use for presentations), or with my personal laptop (which I have all my crap on).
