okay, I'm obviously not built for the stress that is the bidding on ebay... ::sigh:: (One, I misssed the final $10 outbid by getting distracted. One, I was winning and the auction was cancelled w/ about 30 min left b/c it was sold.) So anyway, the apple website is selling "iBook G4 1GHz/ 256MB/ 40GB/ Combo/ E/ 56K/ 14-inch TFT - Apple Certified" refurbished for $899
I can get 512 mb ram for about $100, or, alternatively, 256 ram for about $50
I can get dvd+-rw for about $130
I can get Airport for about $70 (I think)
~ about same price as Gateway (okay, fine, $1200)

Or, y'know, I can try one of those non-pyramid schemes where I sign up for a "free iBook gift" in exchange for getting 18 of my friends and family to sell *their* souls and then reclaim said souls. But that brings too many social and ethical issues into question.

So really, it's a question of whether I'm willing to give up extra 40gb harddrive space + processor speed (I don't know how an iBook 1ghz 512kbL2 would compare to a 1.5 2mbL2 on the Gateway) in exchange for ... um... reliability, hardware efficiency, prettiness, mac Panther OS, etc.

Hm... the processor difference doesn't sound too threatening. So will I be able to live on 40gb in the next 3 years? Which, when you think about it, comes down to whether I'll be doing any video editing in the next 3 years. (Considering that a raw clip can be, like, 3 gb). Ah! but that is where an external harddrive would come in, which is a much better deal, cost:gb ratio-wise, than internal. What suffers is portability (but I do not foresee being a vagrant, and when you detach peripherals, would still be quite portable. Good thing also about external is switchability).

Perhaps I will call parental units tomorrow and discuss with them. No Chinese School tomorrow! woot.

do people walk cats? Cause I think Theo needs walking. So just then he was making pitiful noises and batting at the doorknob again. Now Bob pretty much said "keep your cats in, bad to be poking around the dirty dark basement" (Sushu's interpretation of "I found him downstairs"), so I picked Theo up and gave him a tour of the basement. I think he was rather perplexed, but at least now he's not mewling pitifully anymore.

Also: Got $1049 iBook (14", 1.2 ghz, airport, 60gb, 256mb, +$76 tax) and $129 iomega dvd writer (-$20 rebate + $6 shipping). Total: $1125 + $115 = $1240. (vs. Gateway + tax = $1195) So for about $50 more I get:
- equivalent processing speed. (Well, 1.2 on a mac vs. 1.5 on a PC, I find equivalent)
- 2 fewer USB ports
- 256 mb fewer RAM
- much better video and image and sound
- an alternative, not just a replacement
- a flexible dvd writer
- a stouter laptop. (Gateway had weak hinge problem)
- 1 additional year of use, hopefully.
