Jan. 19th, 2003 09:34 pmGREGORIAN CHANTING in GOTHIC CATHEDRAL! yay! That was fun. Later I heard that the Cardinal came. o.O;; Cardinal, attending a 16th century Spanish mass in non-denominational church sponsored by robber-baron? Yes. Chanting was v.v. nice. The whole ethereal thing. Two conflicting thoughts of: "Light! Air! Heaven! God! Beauty!" and "Wow, this whole setup is so manipulative. Encourages the poor peasants to work harder by giving them the prospect of happiness after life, ascending to heaven, etc." Yes, very inspirational music, and the high vaulted ceilings and large stained-glass windows didn't hurt either.
And now the dorky part of the concert: half the time I was thinking about Duo's spiritual transcendence upon hearing this (Nicole: v. good mood music for writing Duo pursuing spiritualism), and then of course there's Escaflowne gregorian chanting, with giant mecha with flowing capes, and then it was listening to the words and trying to identify Latin words by the English translation provided, and some quick Spanish syntax. Soon realized that Domino is Lord, Dei (or something of the sort) is God, Fili (or something) is Son, and of course, Christo was Christ. Used those as place-markers to follow along with the sung sermon (easy), and the discanted chants (harder)
Overall, 2 hours well-spent. I figure this is as close to Europe as I'm gonna get.
Duuuude, Wu Hung needs to update his Chinese map. It's still got a shrunken Inner Mongolia on it. And he doesn't get me. Good thing I've got office hours with him tomorrow. ^_~
