So one of the problems that we've been running into, is that we both get home too tired to cook much of anything, and so we barely scrape together the food for the baby, and then have no energy to really make food for ourselves.
Recently I've been trying out this food subscription system where basically, for roughly the cost of buying from the grocery store, they deliver "meal kits" with recipes to your door. So all the ingredients are there and in the right amount, and you basically throw everything together and shove it in the oven for 20 minutes. In general, it's been pretty good -- less of our veggies are going bad, we're having more full, warm meals at home instead of eating out.
But I've also been experiencing a lot of white people cooking. Specifically, the "stuff everything into a pan and throw it in the oven" type. On the one hand -- hey it does nice things to chicken and salmon, especially if you pull it out early enough. On the other hand, I feel like I'm doing atrocities to the veggies by not stir-frying them.
For example, the meal kit tonight was like "put these raw salmon pieces in a pan with a dash of salt and pepper. Now put some lemon slices and whole garlic cloves *near* the salmon. Now add some raw broccolini and a splash of olive oil. Now shove it in the oven for 12 minutes." And I'm like ... why does the recipe insist that the lemon and garlic be merely adjacent? Does the recipe not enjoy flavor? Surely it'll taste better if I stir-fry the broccolini?
Anyway, on the one hand, I'm happy for the subscription service for bringing back some cooking into my life. On the other hand... I'm gonna be doing some major alterations to the recipes.
