It's wuxia central over here...
Feb. 12th, 2012 09:36 pmFriday night, on the drive home from an Aza-adventure (involving a total of 3 hours driving in the dark in the rain, half an hour of stumbling around in a dark forest going down stairs with no flashlight, and 1 hour of awkward sitting on wet logs at a beach birthday party), I was remembering the hottest scene in Reign of Assassins, and I realized the Core of the Wuxia. Specifically, I was able to verbalize what it was that made wuxia stories so intriguing to me: the character's desire to leave and the forces that keep pulling the character back into the Jianghu. Always having to make that difficult choice of what do you value more: staying out of the Jianghu, or protecting your wife? Preserving the relationship with your childhood friend, or gaining status and power in the Jianghu?
So on Saturday I talked with Chris a bit, and today I wrote up a new version of Jianghu from scratch. And just now Jono and I playtested it. There are definitely tweaks and changes that need to happen, but overall it feels much less awkward than the previous versions of Jianghu. Yay!
One major change is abandoning the nitty-gritty stuff. I realized that a lot of Former Jianghu was aimed at structuring genre stuff into the game via complicated fight mechanics and reputation wagers. But that's not what Wuxia stories are actually about. The fighting and the bravado is just flavor. Former Jianghu was all genre flavor with no core. So with New Jianghu I started with the core and worked out from there.
So anyway, pretty excited about that!
My goal this next week is to finally finish Sixteen. I've had the last 4 pages penciled for a while now, but it's not sitting right with me, and I need to go back and probably re-do a few pages. If I get it done this week, I can even pdf it and use it to test out on-demand printing!
Also, I have a week of break coming up, and I'm thinking of tie-dyeing some underwear and socks on Monday, 2/20. Does anyone want some tie-dyed socks or underwear from me? I'm happy to either send you some or you can come tie-dye with me! Anyway, you have my email, so tell me your underwear size and you may get some in the mail in about a month. :D
