Jun. 1st, 2003 01:20 amhave I lost my ability to appreciate subtlety?
I watched Quiet American and Pianist. Both very beautiful and very subtle films, no in-your-face-ness, just kind of "hi, here I am", but I haven't come out of the theatre feeling enlightened or thoughtful. Just... detached. Especially the Pianist. Sure, Adrien Brody has such a wounded soulful look, but the movie didn't seem to be about anything. Well, it's about survival, but I seem to be missing something. Is that how the Holocaust felt? Too overwhelming to really absorb anything, so you just kind of keep moving on with your life and try not to think about what happened? He has a lot of luck, reminds me of Levi. Which made me think about survivor's guilt. When all of your family are dead, and all the people who helped you are dead, what do you do? Go on playing the piano? Wouldn't you wonder about why you're still alive? Why you didn't/couldn't do anything to help them? Quiet American... I haven't quite figured out the symbolism of Fuong = Vietnam, but again, there seems to be the return to stasis.
Maybe I've been too thinked-out. bleh.
Chinatown today w/ Kim and Allie was fun. bought food, had good chinese food, and then Kim dragged us to karaoke, and I actually sang 2 songs by myself and 2 songs with Aliie, so go me!
to sleep!!
