Okay, last night's 4+ hour movie was long, but cool. Today's 4- hour movie was long and yucky. Granted, the topic of Civil war saves it from failing utterly. (not matter how hard you try, war just refuses to appear boring. Although this is close. Maybe because there was no war.) But it's very incoherent. Gettysburg had a single purpose: Gettysburg. 3 days. Union, Confederate, War.
God and Generals can't seem to find its purpose. So it tries to cover the first three years of the war ... by jumping an entire year. So you get First Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. And it can't decide who to focus on and how to focus. Nothing was fully developed, just a lot of random threads. Some threads are well-done, but not complete. It tries too hard to lead up to Gettysburg. You don't need that. It should just be its own movie. (::gives the movie moral counselling::) It's like a blind woman decided to weave a tapestry about everything that happened in her life, and then fell asleep in the middle, and then woke up to finish the end. You sorta get a feeling of what it could have been, but isn't. Bad screenwriting, and worse editing. Like a tree, and then a random super-samurai stopped by and decided to chop off random branches, then assassin stops by to shoot off some more, and then random mecha comes and stomps on the rest. It's not a tree anymore. It's a bunch of TOOTHPICKS.
But I like being totally emotionally manipulated by stories. (like LotR, good fanfics, Wagner...) The music comes on, people die, people say deep things, I get teary. Funny that I didn't get teary for Gettysburg, but I did for the Irish Brigade. But yeah, to be able to sit down and completely give myself to a well-executed story is nice. It's just that this one DIDN'T WORK.

Then stopped by the Renaissance thingy (actually, it's called the society for creative anarchy or something, and you can be anyone anywhere from 600-1600 AD) and did some medieval dancing. Talked to a "yamabushi", one of those crazy mountain monks. That guy had crazy Japan-fetish. Dressed his entire family up in Japanese clothes. ::wants pretty dress::
