Ack
So.... my husband has a tendency for doom.
Usually I deal with that by doubling down on my faith in humanity, etc etc. But sometimes I draw comics in response. For example, this comic was a response to Spouse asking me that exact question one night. Talking with him about his worries about the aftermath of the election helped solidify the last part of Vote Prep. (He was talking about, even if we are able to get past all of the ballot shenanigans that Trump is currently pulling and manage to win, there's 30-40% of the population who would be very angry, and also have guns. Yipes.)
Anyway, this morning he said he's going to start researching places to emigrate to, since America is a failed state, and that we should do so before November, since countries would not want to deal with American refugees after the election. I was like "but a lot of borders are closed due to COVID." SIGH. I mean, my parents did immigrate to the US when I was 5, and Miss Rutabaga is currently 4, so that's definitely a thing that we can do. There are some pretty decent English-speaking countries out there that aren't America. I'd have to find a new job, hopefully still in teaching, but it's probably going to take a few years to get re-credentialed, unless I teach at an International School of some sort.
I like where we live, but I also know that we're in this tiny bubble where Things Are All Right, and probably will be after the election, mostly because we're in the upper-middle professional caste in a very liberal area (I think 73% went for Hillary in 2016). At the end of the day, though, the thing I'm most worried about is the further damage that a second 4 years of Trump would do to the climate. (Yes, a lot of organizations and corporations are doing a lot of good stuff, but we need national emissions standards, we need to stop funding fossil fuels, etc etc.) That's something that we can't run away from by moving to another country. Also -- if America does go to utter shit and 2020 is the last election we'll have (which is what Spouse says to me all the time), a fascist America is going to threaten a lot of world systems.
Anyway, sorry for all the doom and gloom -- I usually try to process Spouse's doom-mongering myself, but sometimes it just gets too much.
