Spiffy things from History of Art
now that I'm actually done with the book, I'm gonna flip thru and list all the spiffy things I liked.
Egypt
- Funerary district of King Djoser in Saqqara. (papyrus columns... yummm)
- Sitting statue of Khafre, from Giza. The sculptor did the front and side views, then rounded it out. pretty smart!
Ancient Near East
- statue of Gudea, from Lagash (loverly arms)
- Persian animal style. The pics in the book include a painted beaker from Susa (in the Louvre), and a pole-top ornament from Luristan (in Brit. Museum)
- Palace of Shapur I in Ctesiphon, Iraq. It as blind arcades and other spiffiness from Rome.
Aegean Art
- Cycladic people statues... so simplified and elegant.
- Minoan: "The Toreador Fresco" in Crete.
- "Octopus Vase" : who needs silly lute-toting muses on vases? A large, writhing octopus is so much more amusing!
Greek Art
Paintings
- Dionysus in a Boat, by Exekias
- Eos and Memnon, by Douris (a.k.a. Greek Pieta on plate)
Sculptures/Architecture
- Pediment sculptures. Examples in book includes: Temple of Aphaia in Aegina, Temple of Zeus at Olympia, Parthenon,
- Acropolis. duh

- Aulus Metellus, bronze statue in Florence
- Imperial Procession, part of Ara Pacis frieze
- Spoils from the Temple in Jerusalem, relief on Arch of Titus
- Trajan column, just because it's funny. ("viewers must run around in circles like a circus horse if they want to follow the narrative, and can hardly see the wealth of detail above the fourth or fifth turn without binoculars.")
