I think I'm going to take at least one French class in college. Reading books with lots of random French in it with no translation is really getting on my nerves. Really, what is it with Russian guys? (War and Peace, which I never really got past the long boring part, and Lolita) And there was The Awakening for Women Writers, which had random French in it (b/c it was in New Orleans). French seems harder to learn than Spanish, though. More grammar twists and pronounciation stuff? I see more "frenchies" who can recognize Spanish, than us recognizing French....

Spanish is harder for me ^^;; probably because I learned/got used to French much longer ago (I've been ignoring my Spanish book for a long time now ^^;;;). I don't know what it is with French w/no translation in Lolita. Email me if there's anything particular that you'd like to know... (I'll try my best to help you... I think sometimes Humbert says something that's significant and most of the time just similar to what he says in English.)

I guess it's hard to start a new language after you're used to one format...

Thanks for your offer! I know most of the French I can deal without, but it's just frustrating when there I am, happily reading along, when suddenly he starts spouting French. Or when he's with Charlotte or Gaston, and he comments on how bad their French is and prints a whole paragraph of them speaking French, I'm just like, okay, totally missed that... But hey, if normal non-French speaking people can read and understand, then I can, too!

I remember lots of random French in Crime and Punishment too. Or was that Jane Eyre? Yes, I think it was Jane Eyre. Never mind. Crazy Brit.
