Augh I've basically spent the last month falling into a Tim Drake-focused Batfam hole. You know that thing where when you first start reading in a fandom and it's nothing but the top tier best fics because you can just search for a tag and then sort by Bookmarks? Yes, that. I love Identity Reveal stuff, and I love Found Family stuff, and there's also the whole "person who doesn't think they deserve to be loved + the people who love them" thing. All very :chefkiss: My AO3 bookmarks page is all batfam now.
Here's some faves from what I've consumed (probably quite familiar to folks who are already in the fandom lol), sorted from shortest to longest:
- The Second Stage by nightwalker (8k)
Short and full of feels: basically Tim is touch-starved and determined not to bleed on anyone. Unfortunately his family finds out and he gets lots of cuddles.
- Brother Wanted by Vamillepudding (11k)
Hilarious one where Tim puts out an ad for a brother and Jason accidentally answers. I love the little!Tim characterization here.
- 1-800-ROBIN by spqr (12k)
A great entry in the "Jason Todd finds out and forcibly adopts Tim into the Batfam" category, all told through a series of phone calls. Great Jason Todd voice. The only thing is that Tim in this story is behaving more like an 11yo than a 9yo, so I just mentally adjust that upwards a bit.
- A Meditation on Railroading by eggmacguffin (25k)
Wow this is an amazing fic about gaslighting. It's about Tim being abandoned in Atlanta by his shitty dad and deciding to train-hop his way home. I feel like I understand gaslighting better now.
- The Lone Ranger Never Had to Deal with Bruce Wayne by theskeptileptic (25k)
This is a fic where Tim plans to fake his own death and run away to Canada to start a new life. Features hilarious little!Tim logic -- I love how his plans are both very smart but also very stupid at the same time, because he's 11.
- Missed Calls by nightwalker (26k)
5 times that Tim's dad didn't pick up the phone and one time he did. A particularly good rendition of the "Tim's parents are neglectful" trope. A good 5+1 really explores the range of the premise, and this fic delivers.
- exception by cassiopeia721 (27k)
A good character piece where Tim is taught that he's the "exception" -- exceptionally bright and mature, and therefore "kid" rules don't apply to him. Which doesn't do well for his emotional development, of course, as he deals with family neglect and also getting beaten up by Jason Todd.
- Banshee In A Well by liverobinreaction (bugbee) (43k)
In this one, Tim keeps dying and coming back to life. It doesn't leave any emotional trauma around self-worth at all, no sirree. Nor does it feed into Tim's self-sacrifice tendencies at all, either, of course not.
- buy back the secrets by sundiscus (71k, 4/6 chapters)
I love the characterizations in this one, particularly Kon! It's a super cute Tim/Kon fic where Kon doesn't know that Tim is Red Robin. Great plotting, too! It's got 2 more chapters to go and chapter 4 ended on a cliffhanger, but you know things are going to be resolved and okay :)
Anyway, this has been a major detriment to my productivity, but also, maybe that's okay. I need to give myself grace for not being super productive all the time.
But also, I know that my major block right now (and part of the reason why I've been reading so many fics) is that I have a bunch of Things That I Should Do But I Don't Wanna:
- I have an anthology comic that I should finish but I just hate it, but it's also too late to change it, so I think I'm just going to have to accept that it's crap (ugh) and bring it to an unsatisfactory ending. URRRRRGH. I keep giving myself deadlines to finish but instead I just keep ... reading fic instead. THIS IS AN UNPLEASANT TASK AND THE MAJOR BLOCKER.
- Quest Expo is April 10th at school, which means I need to do a lot of logistics work. At the same time, I need to get my own Quest done, which involves doing some design/drawing for the TTRPG that I've mostly written
- I need to do some summer planning, such as buy tix for wedding, figure out what we're gonna do in China, figure out getting of Visas
- School trip planning -- I need to figure out what we're doing in Fresno and probably call (gasp!!) some people.
Anyway, I just need to get through this stuff in the next week or so, and then I'll feel better about everything.
(Yes, this afternoon's AO3 downtime has helped me stop procrastinating for a bit)
