Well, now, finally back from New Orleans. Fun trip overall. Steamboat ride, eh. Swamp tour, okay. Plantation tour, fun! Stomping around French Quarter was fun during the daytime, with all the street artists and stuff, but night was scary, with weird strip clubs and the prevailing smell of piss and cigarrettes. Anyway, 5 days without a thought to homework. Relieving while it lasted, but now doubly stressful now that I'm back.

Everyone should be getting their college stuff. Somehow I wish I cared more, but I don't. Not really. An envelope from Stanford saying "you're good, but not good enough," and one from Pomona saying "you're good, but too many good people applied, so you're waitlisted". ::shrug:: I personally am not really caring. My parents really want me to stay close, and Dad is clearly biased towards Berkeley for what I can get for the low price. I'm also guaranteed 4 year housing for Berkeley, which makes it considerably more attractive. Only thing that might sway him is probably Princeton, but I don't really want to go there anyway. (Too smart too smart).

I watched about 15 min. of Kenshin OAVII ep.1 (courtesy of Tochi) before I left for N'awlins, and I'm totally disgusted by the sub quality. I'd almost rather watch it raw, b/c the sub is so bad. It says something when they translate "dojo" to "temple." Bah. I'll wait until I finish it before ranting too much, but here's some of the sub mistakes that SASSE list ppl picked out. (just to prove that part of it is the subber's fault, for making everyone sound so superficial and yucky)

Examples (Richard Fung)

Jine's famous dying speech, lots of it are wrong. "A hitokiri is after all a hitokiri", was translated as "A hitokiri deserves to be killed by another hitokiri". Makes no sense right? This is such a famous line and makes you wonder if the guys who subbed it have watched no Kenshin at all.
When Yamagata asks Kenshin, "What can you do w/ 'one' sword in this day and age?" The counter "one" was translated as "book", so it comes off as "in my book, in your book". It's no big deal because they got the gist of it, but sounds funny as heck.
Some complained that Kaoru is too forward. But didn't Kaoru say "how could this person have killed?" when she looked intently at the gentle Kenshin doing laundry, to which Yahiko answers "How should I know?" Instead in the sub, she commented Kenshin's handsomeness to Yahiko. Quite a difference eh?
When Kaoru and Kenshin are surrounded by the Sakura petals, Kaoru tells him "you don't need to force a smile", but in the sub she says "Is it possible for you to smile in front of me?" Again, Kaoru comes off as pushy..

Examples (Serizawa Kamo)

When Hiko is talking to Kenji, Hiko asks Kenji if he was still unwilling to go back to Tokyo. In the non-adv translation (NAT from now on ^^), he asks if Kenji was still willing to go back to Tokyo. And there are other mistakes as well... for instance, Hiko says "There is no use in learning the sword that your father learned", where as in the NAT he says, "Meeting your father is like going to war" o.O
In the talk between Yamagata and Kenshin, Yamagata says "Though we have an army, there are few soldiers who actually know how to fight." NAT version: "I know this from my spies. I understand that fighting is against your atonement"
Dialogue between Kaoru and Kenshin, talking about Kaoru's father.
Original version: Kaoru says "You can create a new style of the sword, Kenshin, given your skills with your sword." And Kenshin replies, "With a sword that has taken so many lives, what kind of new style could I create...?"
NAT version: Kaoru says, "I think you do too with that reverse weapon you have" And Kenshin replies, "People must stop living by the sword... The... reverse weapon...?"
