augh I need a to-do list to get my brain in order.
but also -- some whines:
- I don't want to have to start thinking about the November election yet. I know I should. I had a lot of momentum until March happened and between COVID and Biden I was just like "okay, I'll vote for him in the general but I don't want to deal with this right now." Figured I'd tune in around the time of the convention (which has been postponed until August, so ). But yes, I should start caring more actively. Figure out what I can do to make sure that votes get counted, that proper information is spread, etc.
- My period is here! Which is ultimately good, since it's been 8 months since my last period, and it means that my body is doing something positive. Still, I wonder what it says about me that it's only in the summertime that I have the spoons to think about my health.
- I want a national conversation about work. Essential workers being guaranteed certain levels of pay and health care and sick leave. And whether we need this current "work for $ to pay rent" system, or maybe people should just be guaranteed basic housing. And whether the 9-5 workday is actually needed. What about 4 day workweeks? Or 20 hour workweeks? Is there a convenient website that shows how these ideas would work, and how to agitate for them? 8cantwait.org really helped mobilize our city toward better police accountability policies, but what is something I can do to get this conversation about work started? Does the AFL-CIO have something? We're so used to thinking of work as this personal contract between us and the employer. I want us to think about it on a larger scale.
- I was thinking about how there actually aren't Asian-Americans in Marvel movies, so there can't actually be a discussion about poor portrayal of Asian-Americans in my corner of the fandom because there actually aren't any. I don't know what I think about that, and the fact that I kind of just assume that there won't be any media representation.
- To complicate matters, some of the people I follow have been getting into The Untamed/陈情令/魔道祖师? And a part of me is like "omg is this what it feels like to be Japanese-American and have all these weebs around making Statements and Fanart?" I have so many complicated feelings about China and Chinese culture and now apparently it has discovered soft power through gay web romance series and I don't know what to think about that. I'm, like, retroactively so embarrassed for my high school/college weeb self. Adding to that is the fact that I've always consumed wuxia stories through text, not film, so if I were to actually try to find out about the source material, I'd probably read it rather than watch it (I prefer watching Chinese historicals where the emperor is trying to figure out which of his sons is least likely to backstab the others during this grain crisis in Hexi). But then if I read it, I don't really connect with the American branch of the fandom. But if I watch it.... I dunno man. I'm exhausted just thinking about all this.
Anyway, blogging was on my to-do list, so I'll count that as done. In the hour I have left this afternoon, I think I'm going to post something to Patreon, just so that that's done. Then tonight I'll ink the rest of the comic that I was working on last night during the stream. (The stream was fun! Will probably do it again! Not next Tuesday night b/c I have an HOA meeting, but maybe the one after that?)
