Had a bad day today in the "all out of social energy but craving human connection front". Talked about it with Hoosband, then read this article about work hour inflexibility widens the gender gap and this article about how same sex couples divide chores evenly -- until they become parents. A few lines that jumped out at me:

"Work and much of society are still built for single-earner families. "

"Overwork is most extreme in managerial jobs and in the greedy professions, a term coined by the sociologist Lewis Coser in 1974 to describe institutions that “seek exclusive and undivided loyalty.” (Rose Laub Coser, a sociologist and his wife, also used it to describe the expectations of motherhood)."

"Certain changes would lighten parents’ demands at home, like universal public preschool, longer school days, free afterschool care and shorter school breaks. But the ultimate solution, researchers say, is not to make it possible for mothers to work crazy hours, too. It’s to reorganize work so that nobody has to.

The most effective way to do that, Ms. Goldin’s research has found, is for employers to give workers more predictable hours and flexibility on where and when work gets done. One way that happens is when it becomes easier for workers to substitute for one another."

Anyways, it made me feel better, to know that this constant struggle that Hoosband and I are having, where we both have very time-demanding jobs, and also want to have hobbies and friends and time for one another, and also spend time with the kiddo, but we keep running into these walls of CAN'T... it's because society and work kind of expects one of the parents to give up on jobs or hobbies.

Gotta keep fighting the good fight, 'cause fuck that noise.

Also, I read some Endgame fixit fics, so I think I'm ready to go see the movie now. :3

I should have told you that, because it's definitely what I've seen over my vasty decades. Yeah, this is totally not just you two, this is society being badly shaped for the people in it. *cheers you on*
