Stop thinking about Science Olympiad, Sushu!
Yep, it's Science Olympiad time!
I got the schedule draft for States today. Silly states people decided to organize it by Event, and not by Time. So I had to re-make one. There are also different times for the even SciOly teams and the odd ones. I don't know which one we are, so I had to make the chart like this. The pink are the odd times, the blue are the even times, and the purple are the overlaps.
(This marks the beginning of major SciOly ranting, interesting only to those in SciOly or know people in SciOly)
Now we see a few problems at a glance:
-->In the pink times, Chem and Physics Lab are at the same time, which means we lose the Neil advantage. Experimental Design and Practical Data Gathering are stuffers, so I'm not too warried about that. From a Distance and Polymer Detectives are at the same time, and we need Ken at one of them. I'm thinking of putting him with Polymer Detectives, because I can trust Stan to study up instead of Ken, and Ken has done Polymer once already, even though that was as a tagger-on to Mike.
-->In the blue times, Science of Fitness and Reach for the Stars has an overlap, so I think I'll have to split up David. If Jon's doing Reach for the Stars, then maybe I can keep David on Science of Fitness and then make him do Feathered Frenzy with me. From a Distance and Polymer Detectives are still conflicted, but Phys/Chem Lab is okay again, so that we can take advantage of Neil's genius. Otherwise, since Yibo and Joanne don't get along for Disease Detective, maybe I can steal one of them to do Feathered Frenzy with me. Hmm....
Overall, though, this is a pretty good schedule, either way. I like how Write it Do it is a "register for a time" type. That frees up people.
I'll be shuffling events pretty soon, but if I work it right and start with the hardest (most studying required) and end with random people in the easiest, it should work out. Some definite pairings: Nancy & David for Qualitative Analysis, Neil & Yibo for Chemistry Lab. (unless they overlap. then Neil gets to choose) And here'ssome pairings that I'm hoping to try: Neil & Robbie for Write it Do it, Ken & Stanley for From a Distance, Daxia & Natalie for Cell Biology, Jon & David for Reach for the Stars, Thomas & Jon for Water Quality.
I'm so glad we have such strong alternates to fill in. We really need them! (Afterall, we're gonna be missing Mike, Yilei, Alessandra, and Adam). A few concerns involve Yisheng, for whom I have to find something relatively theoretical. I'm so proud of him for Cow-a-Bungee, though! Hmm... do you think he's willing to do Reach for the Stars? Maybe I can tempt him with astrophysics...
Another issue is that no one seems willing to do Feathered Frenzy and Rocks and Minerals with me. Yilei was a *tremendous* help with Rocks and Minerals, so I'm hoping I can find someone willing to do a little minor studying up for Rocks and Minerals with me. Maybe cover the rocks so that I can cover the minerals better or something. I also have to start studying Feathered Frenzy soon. Otherwise I'll never get anything done. I think Feathered Frenzy scares more people, though, because you have to identify birdcalls. Oh well, we'll see who I can kidnap for that. Maybe David because he's smart and because he didn't do any Engineering. (I'm always nicer to people who devote time to Engineering, maybe because it's a very obvious commitment of time. Plus I get to know them better when they hang out at my house for 5 hours every weekend. All they need to do is show up once. Is my bias reasonable?) Besides, I told him he'd get super-hard study events because he refused to do any Engineering, and he's fine with it.
