Well, I solved the server problem at work, only to encounter a non-cooperative USPS website. Guh. But today I *did* manage to draw the first Patreon postcard, even though it ended up being the wrong ratio -- oops! But still, it was good to push myself to draw some illustration stuff and not just comics. Illustration composition is very different from comics layout stuff, but I think it'll push me to be more dynamic and also more color-aware.
The other somewhat disruptive thing about this week is that we got a hotel room in a town closer to Hoosband's workplace -- a 15-minute train ride instead of a 50-minute train ride. It's mostly to see how feasible the commute is for me, and whether the time and energy gained for Hoosband is worth it, plus we get to check out potential neighborhoods to move to. But anyway, it's added to the feeling of dislocation. Here has been my last few days:
- Sunday: Comics Inkathon + roleplaying
- Monday: work, then pack for taiko, then drive to taiko practice (90 min through traffic). 1 hr of flyer printing + 2 hrs of taiko. Then dinner at 9pm. That's when we realized we forgot to pack a change of clothes, so there was no point in checking in at the hotel. Drive home (50 min). Sleep.
- Tuesday: work (lotsa meetings), then weird nap, then pack and drive to hotel (40 min). Arrive at hotel too late to do much. (Hotel internet sucks)
- Today: drive down (50 min in traffic), work, drive up (50 min in traffic), check out the downtown, have dinner, listen to Hoosband play a lot of accordion, drive back (30 min).
And here's what's coming up:
- Tomorrow: work (lotsa meetings), grocery shopping, mom's bday, comics club meetup, then drive up (30 min, prob).
- Friday: check out, drive down (60 min?), work, final taiko prep, pick up bro from airport
- Saturday: drive up (50 min), taiko practice, friend hangouts, taiko rehearsal, taiko concert, drive back.
- Sunday: mom's bday pt 2, drive bro to airport, comics inkathon
Basically it's been a lot of driving and some miscellaneous logistics, and unfortunately the hotel's internet is too sketchy for watching Netflix and drawing. Alas.
That said, I'm... okay with driving <1 hr for commute? It's actually kind of relaxing to space a bit and listen to the dulcet tones of NPR... at least it takes a lot less out of me than an hour on the train does to Hoosband. But basically the big thing is that regardless of where we live, our evening time is going to be more segmented. Instead of what we used to have (5 solid hrs from 6pm-11pm), it's gonna be 1 hr of solo time (6-7), then dinner and couples time (7-8:30), then 1-2 hrs of individual activity time before 10pm hits and it's early bedtime.)
