Justice League

I should really be sleeping right now, but I can't. So let me tell you about Justice League.

These few days, with Jono gone, I've basically finished watching Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. I have them on disc, but they're also available on Netflix!

The series is divided into "Justice League," which features the original 7 in various pairings, dealing with villains in 2-episode storylines. Then it was rebooted as "Justice League Unlimited", which has an expanded cast of various 2nd tier heroes and villains, and is generally sillier and more episodic, but also with an overarching b-plot that's pretty decent.

Reasons why I enjoyed watching it:
- There are some episodes with good storytelling!
- There are some pretty awesome fights! They do a decent job of everyone having something to do, which is hard when it could have easily been the Superman Show. They also go up against a very large variety of villains, so you're not just stuck with villains types from one show.
- It was a good intro to the DC universe?! There were a lot of characters that I really encountered for the first time by watching this, but the stories don't depend on pre-existing knowledge -- they do a pretty good job of introducing 2nd tier characters early in the episode so that you don't get too lost.
- I really enjoyed the animation style and the sleek character designs, especially Green Lantern and J'onn.

Now let me tell you about my favorite moments/episodes! (Minor spoilers, because it's me.) This is kind of a recommendation list of cool episodes to watch??? I'm going to pick the ones with good ensemble storylines, but also try to pick a "spotlight" episode for each of the 7 main people.

Justice League

Season 1: It's pretty hit-or-miss. I would say def. watch Secret Origins, but everything else is pretty much "only if you like that character"

Secret Origins: This is where the Justice League gets together. Pretty good intro to all the characters. I also really like the Batman/Superman interaction. There's a part at the end where Batman basically builds the Justice League space station, but when Superman makes his rousing speech of "let's be Justice League!", Batman was like "I'm not a people person," and only promises to be a part-timer.

War World Part 1: Part 1 has some good Superman stuff in it -- Superman punching and being a boyscout. Part 2 is dumb.

Fury: A good Wonder Woman episode -- plus lots of awesome girl action.

Legends: They go to an alternate world where there's Golden Age Justice League knock-offs. It's pretty cute if you like your comics/cartoons hokey. Decent Green Lantern episode. (old baby warning, though.)

Metamorphosis: A Green Lantern episode. GL is kind of "serious yelly guy" for many of the episodes, and the ones I like him in, he's part of an ensemble. But at least here he's caring about something. Honestly, I like kid GL the most, in JLU's "Kid Stuff."

Season 2: Much stronger overall -- you should totally watch these. The other episodes are decent, too

Only a Dream: This one gets into each of the Justice Leaguers' psyches a bit, which is fun. Basically a bunch of them get trapped in their worst nightmares. Batman is short on sleep and trying to do detective work. J'onn uses his psychic abilities.

Maid of Honor: Some great Batman/Wonder Woman interaction here. Have I mentioned that I totally ship them? Anyway, I really like how much they respect each other. Example from the beginning of the episode: Random bad guys show up, Bruce Wayne and WW are present. Bruce starts to "suit up", but Wonder Woman just rips off her extra dress part and leaps into action. Seeing that, Bruce was like "okay, she's got it handled", and just chills and watches.

A Better World: This is an ensemble one, where they have to deal with the more autocratic Justice Lords from another dimension. Batman vs. Batman was pretty awesome, and not in the fighty way.

Star Crossed: The season finale is pretty awesome. Good Hawkgirl storyline, among other things. Some pretty awesome fights, too -- I particularly like part 2 because they're in their civvies, and there's a pretty good prison break fight.

Justice League Unlimited

Season 1:
Dark Heart: The villain is pretty cool. Stars The Atom, of all people.

Once and Future Thing: I particularly like part 1 because it's set in the Wild West, and Batman refuses to use guns, so there's a part where everyone's responsible for shooting an enemy gun, and Batman... uses a Batarang. Also, this is after Bruce Wayne's been redesigned to have blue eyes, so he's even hotter. Part 2 is meh because they go to the future, but it does feature good Batman and Old Batman repartee.

Ultimatum, The Doomsday Sanction, Question Authority, Flashpoint, Panic in the Sky, Divided We Fall is part of the season story arc that pits the Justice League against Cadmus, and is basically a "who watches the watchmen" type premise. Superman gets increasingly pissy, which is no fun, but there's some awesome Batman moments, especially when he calls out Superman for his shit. If you're to just watch one, go with The Doomsday Sanction.

Season 2
Flash and Substance: It's a Flash episode! You actually get to see him in his element in Central City, and he's so adorably hokey!

The Great Brain Robbery: Basically, Lex Luthor and Flash switch brains. What's cool about this episode is seeing how dialogue and body language is used to show Flash in Luthor's body and vice versa. There's a great part where Luthor as Flash is like "well, at least I can find out Flash's secret identity", but when he unmasks Flash, he's like "who the fuck is this?"

Destroyer: This is part 2 of the Season Finale. I mostly like it because Superman was cool in it, for about 2 minutes. There's also about 1 minute where I got really excited about the possibility of a Chinese superhero who was a dragon, but [spoiler].

Other fun not on Netflix
I also watched World's Finest, which is a Superman/Batman team-up """movie""". Bruce Wayne hits on Lois Lane. (????) Another fun one is Knight Time, where Bruce Wayne has gone missing, and Superman goes to Gotham to pose as Batman. Hilarity ensues.
