Laptop woes
Continuing my laptop woes.... It is now a miracle if I can get my laptop to charge. This means that if a miracle doesn't happen, my laptop has about 5 hrs of life left. D: When a miracle does happen, I have to sit around nervously for 2-3 hours babysitting the laptop to make sure it charges. :( I've gotten so nervous I've actually backed up all my files.
So it's clear that I need to get a new laptop. Last time this happened, I got a PC laptop (a Toshiba, actually), but ran into some unexpected issues:
- Shitty hardware: weak-ass speakers made video-watching painful. Weird graphics card made Minecraft impossible. Fan was on every other hour.
- Habit-switching: I missed my mac keyboard shortcuts and mac-specific apps! Also, going from mac at school to PC at home was hard!
On the other hand, this macbook failed on me after only 16 months. That's not right, man. It might be because I only get refurbished macs, but then again, I don't want to shell out the money for a new mac. Plus I hear that the hardware quality of macs is getting increasingly shitty.
So now I'm trying to figure out what to get next. Here are my requirements:
- Enough RAM to run both Photoshop and Firefox. On the mac that's >4gb. I don't know how much for the PC.
- Sufficient graphics to play Minecraft.
- Decent speakers: should be able to hear clearly from 10 ft away.
- Optical drive
- Fan should rarely be a thing.
- Flexible hinges. (Should open to 135 degrees)
- Size < 14". Price preferably < $1000
My bro got an Acer M5, and he has shown me that it satisfies the above, plus you can get it for ~$700. On the other hand, I was checking out the Apple store, and you can get a refurbished Macbook Pro that satisfies these requirements for $1019, which is barely within the acceptable range.
So the question is, am I ready to make the switch back to PC? Particularly worried about my computer habits... (shortcut keys, etc)
