2012 in Review
Welp, it's my birthday! Checking my email at roughly 10pm last night, I had already received some well wishes from East Coast facebook friends. "Huh, I guess it's my birthday," I said, roughly 2 hours too early. The internet seems more clued in to my birthday than myself.
I like spending birthdays with the immediate family and not doing anything resembling work, but Jono is in San Francisco today, and I have a Chinese school meeting after lunch, so I guess this is less of a birthday than usual.
The other odd thing about this birthday is that this is the first time when growing older feels different. Pre-24, every additional year was a feeling of "Hey, I'm older and more capable now!" From 24 to 28, it was a feeling of "Well, that was another fruitful year. Onward to the next one!" But this year, as I turn 29, the feeling is one of "Oh dear, I'm already 29, and what have I accomplished? Will I make good use of the time I have left?"
Which, I suppose, make these few days of reviewing the past year and looking forward to the next year more important in allaying my fears of stagnation.
New places I went to this year:
- Peru (Now added to my list of "want to go back to" places)
- Tanzania (Now my goal of "visit every continent except Antarctica" is complete!)
- Georgia
- Taiwan (only very briefly, though)
New things I did this year
- started writing a Mandarin 1 textbook
- Taught Asian Studies and Mandarin 1
- Learned SQL and some basic PHP/javascript
- Printed my comics and sold them at APE
- Made a dress to size using a marked-up t-shirt as a guide.
- Made it a point to walk more and eat more vegetables!
Stuff I gave up on this year:
- Chinese medicine
- Banjo (it's fun, but I'd rather be doing something else. So it has gone the same way is knitting)
- Teaching at Chinese School -- too many new things at normal school means less time at Chinese School. :(
