Back to 1942
Just went to watch Back to 1942 with dad. It's really good!! It's one of those Chinese movies where story/plot doesn't really matter, and you're really watching it for the portrayal of humanity in a time of crisis. There's really no good guys or bad guys, just people doing people things, and dealing with war and famine while trying to retain their humanity.
It's also surprisingly nuanced -- Chiang Kai-shek isn't all evil, and there isn't any sort of white savior or communist savior. The acting is really great and there's some really great lines --- especially if you can understand Chinese.
It only has a limited release in the US (around here it's only in theaters until next Thursday). So if you are interested in China and History, you should go watch it!
