Can't sleep --- tends to happen the night before school starts after a long hiatus. 2 weeks isn't exactly long, but it's been filled to the brim with non-school stuff. I'm realizing that there's still a stack of things left to grade. Thankfully, tomorrow's classes are short, and I have cobbled together some pictures and videos to show. Everyone will be easing into the day, students and teachers both.

But might as well take this time to think about my hobbies and various projects.

In general, I work better when I'm fully dedicated to a singular project for several weeks, until it is completed. Then I move onto the next one. Things that definitely fall under this category are sewing projects and programming projects.

However, there are other things that require regular and consistent time dedication. Things that would definitely fall under this category are banjo, taiko, Chinese School, and, if I ever care to, exercise.

Finally, there are things that can be either, such as drawing and reading. I can draw a little each day, or I can mark out a project and spend a few weeks dedicated to that. Similarly, I can either read a little each day, or spend 3 days reading non-stop. For the time being, I'd say that drawing works better as one-shot projects, and reading works better as a regular activity.

Over the last few months I've figured out that I really lack the discipline to do the regular hobbies at home when Jono is also home, because I prefer to leave evening schedules open in case we want to go on a date or do something together. For a long time, that evening time would go wasted if we ended up not doing something together, but I've finally reached a stage where, if nothing else is planned, I work on my own singular project. So I think evening time after dinner really needs to be time for one-shot projects.

As for the regular activities, the challenge is finding places to fit them into my day. These activities tend to work better if I couple them with something else.
- Taiko is every Saturday, which is usually part of the "visit Oakland friends" package.
- I'm going to start walking part of the way to/from school again -- it's a great way to get some reading done.
- Banjo ... is hard to couple with something else (maybe watching a tv show?), but I'll see if I can make a point to get home by 5:30pm and play for half an hour.

Chinese School is the hard one. There's the weekly teaching load, but there's also the random Chinese School work at the office that I just don't have a good time chunk for. For a while, I would go after dropping Jono off at his accordion lesson, but there really wasn't enough time in the middle there for properly dealing with Chinese School things. It needs to be a chunk of time that is (a) during the week, (b) ideally during normal working hours, and (c) factor in the 15-30 minute drive to the office and back. Maybe... Friday afternoon? School usually empties pretty quickly on a Friday, and I wouldn't be stressed about lesson planning for Monday yet.
