Posting from the foreign yet familiar land of Semagic
So guess what? I'm switching back to a Windows system.
My macbook has started getting problems -- the screen hinge is loose, which means sometimes my monitor doesn't light up. The case is being chipped off bit by bit. It randomly starts running super-hot about once an hour or so. It's not at its deathbed, but it's at a state where I'm starting to worry about my files.
So I looked online for various laptop options. The first step was determining if I wanted a mac or a PC. Since Windows 7 is actually a decent OS, I wanted to try using it -- especially the various window-handling features. So I looked around for a website that could allow me to fine-tune my search for a windows laptop (a lot of sites either show you every laptop or ask you to refine your search by choosing between "multimedia laptop", "traveler laptop", or "gaming laptop", which is anti-helpful.) So once I found laptoplogic.com, things were much easier because I could just narrow down by the specs that I wanted. I ended up with a Toshiba Satellite ($549 base price, then I added a better battery and some other things which brought the total up to $649 *after* tax), or roughly 60% of the price of a macbook.
It showed up today, and first of all, I was surprised at the emptiness of the Desktop when I opened it -- I was expecting a lot of crappy trial programs, but it just had the Recycling bin. Secondly, I was surprised at theDock Taskbar at the bottom -- pinned to it was IE, Windows Explorer, and *Chrome*. I quickly got Firefox and unpinned the other ones. Since then I've installed VLC, Photoshop, uTorrent, and Camstudio, so it's looking pretty good. :D
And now I have Semagic again! I haven't used this LJ client since my last Windows lappy, back in 2004. (There's really no good LJ client for Mac). So nostalgic. And hey, I can easily browse my previous posts again. Yay!

Not sure if you saw the news, but Windows 7 SP1 was just released today and it's a quick, easy install - a great way to keep updated!
The Microsoft stores (locations (http://www.microsoftstore.com) including one in WA and San Diego) are also good places to go if you need help or have any questions/want to get new stuff. :D
