My halloween costume...

... was a colonial person:

I got the hat a few years ago when I was in Colonial Williamsburg, and this year I was pondering what would be something "history-appropriate" to wear to school.

My general costume requirements are thus:
- something that I understand and care about
- something comfortable to wear -- both standing and sitting down
- something that doesn't require awkward wigs (negotiated on a case-by-case basis)
- something that I made some part of

So yeah, on Oct 1st and 2nd or so, I sewed most of the britches and the vest, but then with the moving and random bouts of sickness, I didn't get back to it until the night before, so I didn't get to make a jacket. It still turned out pretty well.

I also learned:
- button holes are really easy to do on a sewing machine! I greatly prefer buttons to velcro!
- neck kerchiefs are very practical!
- girls have butts, so pants need to be a little tighter at the top, and the back panels of the pants need to be a few inches longer than the front panels. (I basically cut the fabric based on an existing pair of pants.)
- I really like vests. I should make/wear more.

I'm also very excited about Halloween as a place to exhibit future history geekery. Maybe next time a Tang dynasty court lady? History costumes (especially of the common people) are generally comfortable and practical. To quote from my brother, "Double-plus good!"

:D

ETA: I didn't really celebrate the rest of Halloween -- Jono was in Chicago, and solitaire pumpkin carving is not that fun (especially since I dislike the goop scoop part), so I spent Saturday re-reading 倚天 and rediscovering how much of a wimp 张无忌 is. And really, 小昭 is the only likeable girl in that. Come to think of it, most Jinyong female characters are ... meh. They're either extra-devious or extra-caring, but in the end lose their agency to LUUURVE. bah.

Sadly, I can't read which titles those are, but yeah, Jin Yong gives you these female characters who -could- be awesome, just that in the end, they won't really be.

He also likes to have the brash young woman who will constantly say and do foolish things so the men can always explain things to her and put her back into her place for trying to have agency.

Guh.

That is adorable.
