Man, just finished Gurren Lagann. Such an awesome anime. I don't think an anime has had such an effect on me since Utena. I like its thematic cohesion, and how the plot advances in a spiral format (very appropriate given the themes of the anime). But mostly, I like the messages it sends and the issues that it deals with -- the forward motion driven by kiai (gumption) and love, the restraining voice that speaks in the language of protection, the motivational messages of "you accept your mistakes and move on, facing the future", "believe in yourself who believes in yourself", and "if you wangst I'll punch you in the face", and how battles are resolved through a combination of the power of friendship and the drill of a single individual.
Very similar to Utena -- they're both very self-empowering anime, about becoming your own prince and saving the world by breaking through the impossible with the power of belief.
