SUP?

Dude.... I'm loving this.

We are united with our Russian Brethren to create a greater Livejournal revolution?

All in all it sounds promising. Strange Engrish moments aside, SUP sounds more user and community focused. One of my issues with LJ over the last few years is that it's become distant. Whenever they announce new features, it's like "We made shiny! We know you want!!" Which always leaves me to be ... "um... frills? I couldn't care less about this new feature" "But we belieeeeeeve in our hearts of hearts that everyone would love this." "Um, no." It sounds like SUP is actually opening up the channels of communication. :)

My favorite part so far: No one knows what SUP stands for. (Actually, I don't think it stands for anything)

I, for one, welcome our new Russian mafia pornstars. :D

There's some reason to be wary.

Being a Russian company, SUP is controlled by the government. Especially because it's a Russian media company. Independent media simply doesn't exist in Russia, especially not after the Yukos take-over. Russian LJers were pissed as hell when SUP took over SixApart's Russian section, because hitherto LJ had been THE center of Russian political opposition. Literally every opposition figure in Russia had an LJ, and the freest discussions were occurring of LJ. There was a real worry that SUP was moving in to quash this particular venue (not that the opposition is all that large, powerful, or in any way persuasive to the general Russian public, but the paranoia of dictatorships and all). I don't know whether they did or not, but it's worth keeping in mind. I highly doubt Russia gives a flying fuck about U.S. political fault lines or taking sides within them, but still, this isn't an independent company taking SA over by any means.
