Back at school

Man, I'd rather that every week is a 3 day weekend followed by 4 days of school. By our block schedule, we only lose 4 hours of school time per week, but we gain a whole day of R&R!

Friday night was "zombie" night, wherein the entire apartment is crashed at various locations (bed, couch, dining table, etc). I watched Syriana, which was not a good movie. Too clunky and too floaty.

Saturday, Renee and I went to Mitsuwa, where we bought lots of weird Japanese stuff. I stocked up on inarizushi wraps and umeboshi. Also got meself a bento box.
Then the afternoon/evening was spent at parents' place, barbequeing with the Gang of Four Families. We watched Hot Fuzz, which was a good movie. Lovely shootouts and excellent comedic pacing. I am reminded of the ridiculous action bits at the end of Adaptation. Except that I enjoyed Hot Fuzz and really felt creeped out by Adaptation. Slept over at parents', and headed back home after lunch on Sunday.

Sunday evening, my anime folks (Cat-emy and Andrew) came over, we made gyoza and wontons, got alcoholated, and then watched 2 episodes of Zettai Shounen and 3 episodes of Hayate the Combat Butler.

Zettai Shounen is like slow every-day Japanese countryside life with hint of supernatural mystery. It mostly features children, old people, and cats. Andrew says it's like Haibane Renmei.
Me: "Haibane Renmei is about people stuck in purgatory. Is this anime about people stuck in the purgatory between Childhood and Adulthood??"
Andrew: ".... sort of...?"
Me: "Look, they're making the 'I'm on the cusp of adulthood but I want to reclaim my childhood' speech again!" Parts of it also feels like Neia_7, is like the poorer cousin of Haibane Renmei. (Poorer in both production value and in storytelling)

Hayate the Combat Butler is fun! References many popular anime. I'd say it's like Excel Saga in energy and spunk. The anime references are often more direct, beeped-out names, like **ny and ***dam, and there is a stronger sense of plot, so different from Excel Saga. But quite fun nonetheless.

We have set next Friday for more anime goodness. Yay for Andrew who keeps up with these things!

And now we're to today. Went clothes-shopping, which is always tiring. Every store you go into is trying to sell you a lifestyle, an attitude, a way of presenting yourself to the world. :/ Got a couple of nice shirts and suchlike from some "we'll wrap your clothes in tissue paper and put it in a large paper bag" sort of store, which made my $13 shirts seem to be worth more. :D. Also got a navy jacket half-off because our school colors are blue, white, and khaki. (As teachers, we're not limited to that color range, but I try at least to stay in the bluw->yellow range, and away from the reds. Especially since the kids don't get to wear red, and we're in red territory. Which is sad because I look good in red! :[) Also got a $10 white long-sleeved shirt. For times when I need undershirts to appear "conservative". (I know $10 is a little pricey, but I liked the fabric. It actually weighed something and wasn't horrendously see-through).

Oh! The Eastridge mall also had Daiso, which is like a dollar store, except Japanese. Everything there was $1.50. I picked up some acrylic paints, a small trash bin for my bathroom, a tin of Grave of Fireflies candy, and various other stuff. Each item was $1.50. Bizarre! I'm most excited about going back for their $1.50 viewfolders/portfolios. Yay!

Also, on the way back from the Eastridge mall, I noticed a Lion City supermarket about a 7 minute drive from my apartment. I didn't get to stop in, but I think it'll be less ghetto than the Marina. Plus there's a Blockbuster in the same complex, which means I can start using Blockbuster Total Access again! Yay!

And now I just wasted an hour of "work" time. Oh well. It's too hot in my classroom anyways.
