Pictures

Have been doing lots of things simultaneously, (lesson planning for next year, working on Chinese speech, which has magically acquired a powerpoint), one of which has been drawing pictures for Chinese School. Dad sorta asked me to draw them... er... 10 months ago? I did about a third, but then got stuck on a few pictures and therefore stopped.

Anyway, since that time, I've gotten a tablet-pc, so drawing it is a lot more fun now. The challenge with SCS pictures is that they basically have to be b/w, but my dad doesn't like large chunks of black.... There's also the issue of available space in the textbook...

is for:
山围故国周遭在,
潮打空城寂寞回。
淮水东头旧时月,
夜深还过女墙来。

For 破釜沉舟, which is a story about this general who made the soldiers break all their pots and sink their ships so that "there's no turning back."

For 鸿门宴, which is a story about the head of one army is invited to a dinner with the enemy, where they're trying to kill him while doing a sword dance, but this other guy does a counter-sword-dance, and the main guy was able to escape. Unfortunately, I only had about 1 inch of space... ::sigh::

This is a WIP for 霸王别姬, in which the character from the first story is defeated and is saying farewell to his concubine. (Yes, there's a movie called "Farewell My Concubine", which is more about the cultural revolution, the theatre business, and pseudo-gay-ness.) His horse is basically called the Black Stallion, which makes it hard to do with dad's "no large chunks of black" rule...

I kinda like the roughness of the WIP. I'll have to clean it up, but I must say that my favorite style is the woodcut style...

I need to get these done before I leave, as well as...
- schedule Hep-A shot
- complete weird tax forms for Chinese School
- sign and fax lease
- write speech and create powerpoint
- clean room and pack

Oh, and here are the 1000Kings doodles I did last week, which is on hold pending feedback.

I'm rather happy with the 3-crowns thing (one "royal", one "dark", and one "shangri-la", whatever that means). Not as elegant as the Egyptian 2-crown deal, and maybe not ephemeral enough, but me likes.

Another incomplete sketch

I dunno if she's too Sushu-style woman

The Chinese name is 万王国游, so that's fine to call it "ten thousand kings." "a thousand" is just a word for "a lot," anyway.

I'll get back to you soon, I hope.

It should really be 万王之国游, which is closer to the English. But that breaks up the four character title.

Don't you mean 万王国之游? I have to say that the 国游 part sounds kinda funky to me, especially ending the title with 游. I think having a king is kind of implied in the nature of a 国, as in 《三国演义》. So you could have something like 万国游传, "Legend of Travels Through the 10,000 Kingdoms," which sounds more Chinese-y. If you really want it to sound like "Land of a Thousand Kings," though, you could try something more like 万王之方 or 万王之塞. And if you want the full title, "Adventures in the Land of a Thousand Kings," I think you need a longer title: 遨游万国冒险传, or something like that. There's a long tradition of 7 character titles too, like 大红灯笼高高挂, 满城尽带黄金甲, etc.

Followed Ben's link.

I love Drug's layered crowns, and his lazy posture. Awesome.

I just realized I never commented on these. I think the layered crowns are cool, and I was pretty happy when I saw that KonKon had stopped by and left a present.
