Oh geez. I've completely forgotten about Valentine's Day, but in the last 10 minutes, I've encountered happy/bitter Valentine's day stuff on the interwebs, and now when I go to the LJ update page, it's ... lilac??!

Whatevs. I originally didn't want to acknowledge it, since it doesn't play a role in my life and I keep forgetting about it anyway. And posting about it just perpetuates it. But now with all the hallabaloo, maybe it's more important to reclaim it?

My personal opinion is that if you've got someone that you're happy with, every day should be an expression of your care for each other. If you've got someone that you're not happy with, you shouldn't wait for a grand gesture on Valentine's day to salvage it. Nor should you expect that this one day of the year would make all the different. If you haven't got someone and you're happy, then this holiday is stupid. If you haven't got someone and you've got prospects, then maybe Valentine's Day would bolster your courage. On the other hand, this day comes with so much baggage that you may not want. If you haven't got someone and you're depressed about it, well tough luck, but really, the more you fixate on it, the shittier you're going to feel, and it's all your perception, and not reality.

But really, it's (or at least should be) about friends, no?

So, thank you for reading this for so long, following the minutia and whining of one small Chinese girl, and even commenting! <3

Recent unexpected acts of friendliness:
- being offered a large chunk of lesson plans when I, for once, was honest in mentioning my difficulty to someone whom I haven't chatted with for a while. It reminded me that STEP people are nice, even if I'm generally not socially ept enough to actually chat. :)
- being remembered by someone whom I haven't really talked to in a loooong while, and with whom I seem to have fallen out of touch (and out of sync) with.
- getting a postcard from someone who has a very busy life
- friends who come to visit and are miraculously able to deal with the inconsistencies and flakiness of my life, including but not limited to: ridiculous schedules, an inconsistent G-Calendar, the boonies of Palo Alto, the flu, and general wibbliness.
- friends (and family) who persist despite my aversion to the phone and the scheduling of Chinese New Year's Eve to coincide with UChi-Con

In other (almost related news), last night I dreamt that someone was grabbing my ass. It was funny.

I was also very technologically doomed today.

That was me.

I use it as an excuse to make chocolate. It's no worse than any of my other excuses.

My Korean students were telling me about a holiday they have on April 14th, one month after White Day, called "Black Day." Apparently all the single people get together, eat black sesame noodles, and commiserate. I think that actually sounds more fun than the traditional valentine's day. But giving cards and chocolate to various loved ones is fun.

I will be spending Valentine's day with my virtual boyfriends in Harvest Moon: More Friends from Mineral Town.
