Graduated responsibility

STEP is very big on graduated responsibility, in which we gradually take responsibility for the class, instead of being thrown in head-first. Of course, this means different things for different people. I taught my first full class last Friday, and I think I did okay.

Internet is also a graduated responsibility. It's been a week since my "no LJ and other distracting internet" thing. I've found email/resource-centered internet to be manageable, and I think I may be mature enough to maybe have a little LJ. I've re-instated Firefox to my Dock. And thanks to the magic of Default View, I've trimmed my friends page to the bare essentials. Rules:
- don't leave Default View
- don't let updating LJ get in the way of sleep
- update with substance
Let's see how this self control thing works.

I shall conclude with some thoughts that occupied me during the walk from the main house to my shack
- I'm going to be this tired every day for 8 months. Oh dear.
- Would all parties be happier if my parents slept in separate beds? or even separate rooms? Would that end any possibility of patching up the rift, or is that already a done deal? (This is important because we're trying to buy a bed for the master bedroom.)
- with everything on my plate, would it be easier to just sacrifice social life for a year? Or at least not deal with anyone else's neuroses except mine and my family's?

use your cellphone so you're less dependant on email/internet.

it's more efficient.

Having tried the no frivolous internet thing for a couple years now, I will attest that real life is wonderful, yo'. But I have to say, once you start getting detached from LJ, it's really hard to start writing again... and that's not so good.

Of course, I have no idea what prompted all this, but in my experience these Principled Stands work less well than minor adjustments.
