An informative comment from Stephen on my last post made me look up all this info on the BackDorm Boys, otherwise known as 后舍男生. They're basically to college students at the Guangdong art school majoring in sculpture. Their dormmate is always playing Counterstrike (for some reason I find that very important).

But I guess what I find interesting is the difference between the back dorm boys and the Japanese version. For example, here are the two groups doing the same Backstreet Boy song "I want it that way".

To put it simply: the Chinese are so much more ghetto, man. XD But really, the Japanese kids are so much more serious... and adult sponsored. There's also the whole gimmick of the normal classroom setting where kids seem to spontaneously join in at the right time and shift between "student" and "backstreet boy". I'm not sure which one I like more. I personally am kinda turned off by the heavy physical/facial comedy that the backdorm boys do, but the making of at the end is really cute, and you really get to see the self-generated aspect of the video. It makes me sort of sad that they've become these Chinese celebrities (signed a contract with sina.com... do they still pursue their sculpture-ness?). But anyway... serious, endorsed Japanese version or the rags-to-riches Chinese version?

Also watched some Parkour stuff... crazy stunts are so intense, man.

Oh, the Chinese in the outtakes section:

white text: "forgot the lyrics..."
red text: "someone's knocking" "venomous gaze"
white text: "Aaargh!" "calm down! calm down!"
blue text: "hit my wound..."

True to Japanese society, of course, the Japanese version is more subdued and subtle and they are studying!!!

hooray for stereotyping

But compare to the Chinese one, where they are just screwing around at home, and one guy is playing video games online (Korea???). Clearly these kids are at cram school.

Fair enough, but that just shows Japanese people have no capacity for indiviuality and have to do everything as a group. On the other hand, I bet that kid in the background in the Chinese one is sick of his roommates doing stupid shit!
