Report!

Of sorts.

Yes, it's time for yet another entry of "what's Sushu been doing with her life" thingie.

Well, today, I made it to Japanese! Then I did my Japanese hw, and even went over it with Kawai-sensei, so yay! Then I went to the library and did readings and printings of various sorts. Then I went to a student loan meeting, then went home. I had been doing readings in preparation for a Martial Arts screening tonight, but then I remembered that Prof. Shaughnessy had mentioned a reception thingie at the Art Institute for this new bronze that they got (the Shi Wang Ding), so I emailed and called and eventually got a response around 3:30pm saying that if I get there at 5:45, I can get in.

So after chatting with Joanne a bit (we've been Gmail-Chatting a lot), and finishing one of the martial arts readings, I got to the 173 just in time, which got to the Art Institute just in time. The reception turned out to be a 2-hour talk, but it was some pretty interesting stuff. It's really cool cause Shaughnessy is apparently the go-to guy for inscriptions, so he's like "yeah, this vessel isn't published yet, but it's really cool so I'm gonna show you the inscription." And OMG it was an inscription not of the "yay thank you for honoring me with red kneepads, I shall now honor my ancestor". Instead it was a "there is a way of heaven, and heaven granted us morals" thing. It's so proto-Confucian I was in happy fangirl fits.

So, leaving the museum at 8pm, I made the uber-smart decision of riding the 6 back, so I got back to Hyde Park by 8:30. Yay! Plus I got to sit most of the way (usually doesn't happen if you're catching the 6 from the South Loop) so I finished my other Martial Arts reading. It's written by this film critic who was absolutely hilarious in that dry wit sort of way. Much <3.

Anyways, I stop by and do some shopping, including... Ferrero Rochers (cheap at der Walgreens!), and lots of groceries for the cooking, including... Cooking Wine! Oh my dear heart, it has returned to me. After I got home I made lots of yummy food for Joanne, whose second BA is due tomorrow. There was semi-successful zucchini pancake, onion and mushrooms, sweet tomato and scrambled eggs, and sweet-soysauce shrimp. All of the food got eaten, everything came out perfectly timed, and the food was pretty yummy, too. Yay for cooking food that I like to eat!

So by the time that's done, it was 11:30, and I was even a good girl and cleaned up most of my cooking mess. There was LJ-age, the posting of a comment on the Martial Arts discussion board, and many other things of exciting.

In contrast, yesterday involved me getting up at 8:30, and then falling back asleep again. Getting up at 1pm, and then falling back asleep again. Getting up at 4pm... and loitering about the intarnets until anime club, then having a lackluster anime club meeting, finally coming home to ramen.

And Tuesday was rather boring as well. In fact, I don't remember what I did after keeping Joanne company while she babysat and then having lunch. Oh wait, there was the lackluster dinner of Salmon-ness at Cat's, from 6pm to like, 11pm. Then I went home and did reading about Song Jiang.

Oh man! I have to talk about this. So 水浒 (Suikoden in Japanese) is like, about these bandits, right? And there's the full length 120 chapter version, but 金圣叹 edited a 70 chapter version that took away all the depressing bits where everyone dies stupidly, that became the new canon. So on Monday I found in the library a copy of 水浒 as commented on by 金圣叹. I must state that he is like, the Most Awesome Guy EvAR. His commentaries are absolutely hilarious, but also quite astute. For example, he hates 宋江, and equates him to a manipulative 伪君子, and so would spend most of those chapters saying stuff like "权术可爱" (Manipulative skills quite adorable). But he also loves 武松, who gets introduced into the story through the act of 宋江 running over him. So throughout the chapter where SongJiang kills YanPoxi and is forced to run, his running commentary was to the effect of "if it weren't for this, 武松 would never have appeared, so we must be thankful for these unfortunate events!") And in a prologue, he's like "鲁智深 is impeccably heroic, but he somehow seems lacking when compared to 武松. Perhaps this is because whereas 鲁智深 is top among men, 武松 is a god, and therefore are incomparably virile." He's just such a fanboy, it's silly! (And yes, I'm fangirling about a fanboy for a Chinese novel about bandits)

Monday night I also had dinner with C+J. I'm getting better about remembering this stuff b/c I recently got m'self the Google Calendar. Which I'm currently pimping because you can make calendars public to specific people, so that if you put up your calendar, I can stalk you and see when you're free for further stalkage. It's also got pretty colors.

Tomorrow will be crazy.

I always liked 鲁智深 better, he had heart (and stomach!). 武松 just seemed like a big musclehead to me.

李逵 also gets huge points for when he tries to bring his mom to the clan and keeps telling her how she's gonna live the good life and then she gets eaten by tigers and he goes and fucks their shit up and oh god it's been a long time.

And then there was the comic version by whatshisname, that Taiwanese guy who draws comics of every Chinese classic book and then some.

Sorry to bug you on your LJ, but any chance I can get the scores for the midterm make-ups? The trainees actually really could have used the tests back by today, since their midterm is next week. Thanks!

Thanks! If you could Priority Mail them to me today, so that I can get them by Monday or Tuesday that would be great! I should have made it more clear that we expected to hand them back to the trainees before the final (silly me, not another midterm).

You're so cute when you fandork. Especially over Chinese novels and pieces of crockery.
