2005
Some things never change. My birthday is always spent in Palo Alto, with the family. Rain. We'd always get a Chinese cake (which is markedly better than a western cake because the frosting is actually whipped cream), and there'd always be a dinner of yumminess (this year it's hotpot) and basically a whole day of minor celebrations and a general feeling of fun. We'd always debate about the number of candles and cake is always had with coffee (except that lately we've moved to tea), and photos are always taken at the precise moments of a) sitting proudly with cake, b) blowing out the candles, and c) making the ritual first cut.
But 2005 has been a good year overall. Survived various emotional drama, found paths of less resistance academically, learned about alcohol, and maybe, just maybe, have a sense of where I'll be heading. Made some new friends and managed, miraculously, to keep old ones. Dyed my hair. Made weird foods. Discussed the logistics of censor-bar placement. Threw together an anime convention to talk about flat art and otaku labor power. Learned to love plates. And masks. And the Qing dynasty.
I'm not yet an adult, but I think I'm finally on the path. Jeez, took me long enough.
And this is not to say that I'm suddenly enlightened. There's still the old battles against entropy, and always the too many paths and the optimism and the inability to prioritize.
A new laptop whose portability changed my life and whose mac-ness complicated it.
Or rather, 1st sentence of either the 1st/last entry of every month, depending on how representative it is.
Jan- A New Year.
Feb- Uchi-con, Uchi-con, Uchi-con...
alas (a link to Raskin obituary)
Mar-
well, my new lappy came.
Apr -
Well, I overslept.
May - My life has been a lot happier since I'd gotten out of Modern Euro.
Jun - Okay, so Prof. Alitto set up a meeting with me, Stephen (his grad student), and this guy from MIT, Peter Perdue, who just wrote a book about China/Russia/Mongols and the battle for the central Eurasian arena in the early Qing dynasty and the subsequent integration into a nationalist/mandate historical narrative.
So started work for realz.
Jul - So... Joanne's here.
Aug - If buses can be ridden for free, all would be right in the world
dammit, I'm trying to remember the name of the anime that's GTO with a girl... Seemed to have started with G.... like gensuko or something...
Sep - aaargh.
Man, I was like, walking, and then my ankle did its usual twisty thing, and I fell.
Oct -
Lo, it is nearly a week since my last update.
Nov -
Ah, CTA.
Dec - There is snow!
Hmm... this meme would have worked better if I were to post the whole idea instead of the sentence.
hrm, I was gonna do the resolutions stuff, but perhaps that will wait until tomorrow when I'm more lucid.

Also, being an adult is overrated.

Yes, but adulthood must happen one day. Maybe. At least for a few hours a day when you're dealing with other adults. :X
