Not Harry Potter

Instead of standing in long lines for Harry Potter, I went with Joanne and Laura to watch Pride and Prejudice. I wasn't expecting much, and was utterly taken by the film. Keira Knightley ... didn't detract from the movie. (She was effective for the part, but didn't have enough depth of character. As in, she carried her lines, but I didn't sense the wit of Elizabeth). The directing was beautiful. Camera-work-wise, there were some nice focus-switchy shots, and some v. nice tableaus that look like a painting. Being still without being stiff, y'know. :D On the other hand, there were also some great motion shots at the dances, etc. The ball had a dance that probably took a lot of effort to choreograph and plan the camera-work for, but it was done seamlessly. The pacing was great, with a nice interspersing of quiet/contemplative moments, but without being slow, so it totally didn't feel like a 2 hour movie. I especially liked how scenes didn't always end when the main character left the room. Made them more complete. I also feel that the director played to the actors' strengths. Like "I know you can't do contemplative, so instead walk along here and we'll set up a wide shot with English countryside. Another thing that I liked was how real it felt. It was definitely a rougher countryside. There was dirt. There were pigs. You can definitely see the economic difference.

All that aside, Mr.Darcy was HAWT. Reserved, slightly awkward, a bit confused, very *very* hot. Definitely lots more chemistry between him and Elizabeth than whatever-it-was in PotC. It may be funny for me to say this, but I wish he buttoned his shirt a little more at the end. Elizabeth didn't completely "reform" him, after all.

Of course I have a few nitpicks and wish they ended with the first "Mrs.Darcy" line (but they had to please the audience), but they're all nitpicks. Overall really loved the movie. One of those that I'd like to own. I'm still happy from it. Watching good solid movies makes me happy. :D

Also, saw a preview of the Emma Thompson movie, which looked kinda interesting. Nanny McPhee, I think it's called.

OMG MR DARCY IS SO HAWT.

Joanne agrees with me, so we can't possibly be wrong. :D

Kay, I'll add this to Karen's obsession with Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre and come to the conclusion that the chemical composition of nerdy women hasn't changed much since the victorian era.

ooo ooo yay it is good! when I first saw the preview I read the book to see if I liked the plot and I fell in love with it. I even sat through a so-so baliwood remake.. but then I've been debating about spending the money to see it in theaters.

I better not be disappointed by Mr Darcy's level of hawt-ness. ;)

glad you liked it, man.

The new Pride and Prejudice charmed the pants off me, Keira Knightley and all. I've never seen the BBC version, so perhaps I can't understand the Firth fans screaming travesty, but I've seen Laurence Olivier as Darcy, and I can say that Matthew Macfayden was right up there with him. He made Darcy so tender, a truly beautiful soul -- more character development in one look in his eyes than in the actual book, I think. And not just him but every character was adorable, with the possible exception of Wickham who was strangely dull.

I also loved how the plot was put "in context," with long takes of the scenery, the farm animals, the ballrooms, and the house at night, where you could visually follow the characters almost RPG-like and see how their lives move around each other's and intersect. You see the servants working while the girls are decking out for a night of partying; you see Mr. Bennett comforting Mary at the ball while our hero is stalking our heroine. And that long take when Elizabeth examines Darcy's sculpture collection, you can't help but think back on what Darcy meant by "inferior connections."

*saves up for the DVD*
