Sushu thinks (and rants) about the future

My mom just reminded (quite emphatically) that I should have a goal in life, a major, and that I shouldn't just apply undecided. They seem to think that I should get a master's in history and teach High School History.

And what do I do? I come upstairs, open my LJ, and write out. I'm such a dork. So yeah, this will get a little ranty and incoherent.

So now it's time to think. Well, I guess my parents are right in that computer stuff is just a tool. At least the coding and programming stuff. I'd like at least a minor if not a double major to fall back on in case of emergency, but if I want to actually create something (re: Liberal Artsy stuff), I would only use computer stuff as a medium or expression. So it's really a weighing of importance between practicality and following my calling. (Which appears to be history oriented). Should I abandon the crazy double-major ideas, and just focus on history? I can obviously achieve more by focusing on one thing and just working towards a definite goal. (I guess mom's telling me this because that's how it worked out for her, and I can see her logic.) To be truly successful in a field I have to give it my undivided attention, and I'd rather be successful in a liberal arts field than in a computer science field. I still don't know what I'll major in. Hopefully I can pull off a double major, and then focus on my liberal arts one. But you know? Parents always want their kids to be happy and successful, to lead a comfortable life, but then I just want to experiment a little, test my different ideas. I know my parents are right, but sometimes I'm just not willing to settle down yet, you know?

Hehee, my mom's so funny. "Just give me one app to meddle with," she says. So she gets to "meddle" with my Princeton app, and I get all the other apps to myself. woo!
