More Computer Potentiates

So I called home and told mom my two choices: the Gateway and the iBook.

Today, dad called and said he looked around at Fry's and found these two:

Compaq r3425us, which is on sale for $899 until TOMORROW,
pros: super cheap, good video/screen
cons: 8.2 lbs, not DVD+-RW, about 2 hours battery life, fan constantly on

and HP dv1170us, which is being sold for $1299.
pros: DVD +-RW
cons: 8.1 lbs, 3 hour battery life. Wide screen all that hyped up to be?

Have you noticed, dad is a hp-fan.

Just called dad again. Dad sounded sad that I don't want an 8 lb laptop.

So what's the difference between a souped-up iBook and a normal powerBook? I've been warned against powerBooks. Is it justified?

Well, from what I remember, Aza said his powerbook is less durable than Isaac's ibook, and has worse wireless to boot.

Also the ibook internal microphone is designed better, vis, it doesn't pick up machine noise. If that's important.

Well, here's the iBook specs (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70702/wo/qI6hEr9CAAnY2n6yoJC22TnUPnC/0.0.11.1.0.6.21.1.1.1.0.0.0.1.0) versus the PowerBook specs (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70702/wo/qI6hEr9CAAnY2n6yoJC22TnUPnC/0.0.11.1.0.6.21.1.1.1.1.0.0.1.0).

My roommate has a 12" Powerbook and is 4.6 pounds (the 17" is about 7 pounds).

the powerbook is 4.6 pounds, not my roommate (way to go with my sentence structure). but she loves her powerbook v. much.
