omg, so I was at the Office Depot, and they had this laptop for sale for $999. It was a Gateway 4540GZ, I think, with 80 gb harddrive, 512 mb ram, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 15" screen, and yet manages to be slim and sleek and weigh 5.5 lb. OMG TEH WANT. And I come home to this thing that *randomly shuts down*, has 20gb harddrive, and cannot handle copying between Mozilla and Photoshop. Of course, everyone's been telling me to get an iBook. Which would be of comparable price if I get it with educational discount, I think...
And in the process of typing this and browsing for laptops, this one decides to RANDOMLY SHUT DOWN again. Grrr...

Of course, Mac OS X is infinitely more useful, but that's just my not-so-humble opinion. Also, the mac might not be as cheap as the gateway. I looked up a reasonable ibook configuration via the apple education store:
• 256MB DDR266 (256MB built-in)
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive
• Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Keyboard & Mac OS X - U.S. English
• 14-inch TFT XGA display
• 1.33GHz PowerPC G4
• ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 w/ 32MB DDR video memory
Estimated Ship:
1-3 business days
Free Shipping
Subtotal $1,244.00

Anyway...
I see no reason to get the 14". The 12" actually looks better on screen in terms of resolution. And it's also rather niftiliy very portable.
I am currently browsing the Apple Store for Education.
• 768MB DDR266 SDRAM (256MB built-in & 512MB SO-DIMM)
• 60GB Ultra ATA drive
• Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Keyboard & Mac OS X - U.S. English
• AppleCare Protection Plan for iBook
• 12-inch TFT XGA display
• 1.2GHz PowerPC G4
• ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 w/ 32MB DDR video memory
Estimated Ship:
1-3 business days
Free Shipping
Subtotal: $1,334
If you take out Apple Care, that comes to $1,151.
If you take out the extra RAM too, which can be purchased cheaper elsewhere and self-installed, that will come to $1,016.
