from slashdot: cool way of logging webtraffic: as SimCity!... whoa, old like from last night, I think.
Anyway, School is Officially Done! Well, almost. I have to go turn in a paper at the Gender Studies building tomorrow, along with doing some other things:
- email Yuan
- turn in paper
- get money
- find Michelle, give $30
- start cleaning/packing
- ship some books home
The lease for next year is signed. Slight issues of sublet-finding due to total flake-off, but grrar. Also have to pay security deposit, but I wonder if I can get my old security deposit here back. (that's $470 or something, yo!) Maybe Liu Fang's willing to pay? But she can't send check in time b/c she lives at Yale... Although if things work out, I should get $200 tomorrow from Kate. ($$$!!!) Sorry, I'm a bit desperate. I think I have less money now than I had in 6th grade. Gah. So yeah, tomorrow I should get $200 from Kate. Around August I should get $350 from Chang. on Sept. 20th I should get $570 from Liu Fang.
As for the other apt's summer sublet, if we can get $900/mo, that's $2700 for the 3 months
Isaac will live there 3 months. That's $1050
Stanie will live there 2.5 months. That's $875
some chick will live there 1 month. That's $350
That leaves $425, which, divided between the 3 of us, is $142 each for the summer.
Anyway, saw Harry Potter tonight with Maria and Kelly. OMG, some parts of that movie were just so ... perfect.
Perfection:
- Lupin: his music, his office, his non-bish-ness
- Buckbeak. <3<3<3 (omg, Hippogriffs make so much sense as an animal!)
- Marauder's Map (ending credits = :D. Someone spent waaay too much time on this)
- Patronus
- Knight Bus
- Hermione
- the paintings
- all the little squee-able details, from the headless horsemen to the spine candles to the animal crackers (or whatever they were) to Lupin in the Leaky Cauldron.
- the time-turner sequence (yea, a lot of the plot felt squished, but they did the best they can)
- there were some beautiful cuts in there...
- school demographics seem much more multiracial. (Is that a new Lee and a new Neville? Miss the old ones)
Eh:
- new Dumbledore: a little too fierce. Not twinkly enough. What's with the "I tie my beard to be more practical" thing?
- passage of time: a little too involved in plot to really get sense of time passage. Sure the whomping willow usage was cool, but it was like: people running around! -- class with crucial info about werewolves/premonition -- people running around -- oh yeah, buckbeak...
There was no sign of finals, no passing mention about holidays, etc. Part of the whole thing is that the crazy Dementors were around ALL YEAR. Hermione was over-worked and under-friended ALL YEAR. It took more than 2 tries for Harry to get the Patronus right!
All the plot was placed at early Spring and there's giant pumpkins in Hagrid's yard. wtf?
- werewolves are supposed to look like wolves not... unfurry furries, as Maria put it.
- Ron should learn to have more than the "frown" and the "smile". Harry should learn that "staring blankly" doesn't mean "angsting appropriately about family, past, etc"
- the premonition or whatever it's called. Maybe less reveration = more comprehension. I heard w/ Boogiepop Phantom they did this cool thing where the actor recorded his voice exactly one octave lower and superimposed them.... Also expected Trelawny (however you spell that) to have been more... floaty.
- much as I love Ron-Hermione, this is the wrong book. They're all supposed to be hatin' and stuff b/c of Crookshanks....
Wish they'd explained but understood time constraint:
- some of the Quidditch finals. After all, this is the Big Year. Although the 20 seconds of quidditch in the rain = *heart*
- explanation about Moony, Padfoot, Prongs, Wormtail. The 1 minute exposition in the Shrieking Shack = not enough! That might have even explained the patronus... If there were an extra 5-10 minutes to properly unpack the mysteries...
- since I'm on it, other exposition sequences (like the tavern one). They all sound like the actors were handed a script and told "here, try to say this as fast as you can, use your best medical-ad small-print voice! It's okay if no one catches it, they've all read the book anyways"
Glad they changed:
- got rid of the invisibility cloak issue during Time Turner sequence
- the stone-tossing/werewolf calling
- Peter Pettigrew on the Marauder's map
- more of Hogsmeade, man. They did such an awesome job on the castle...
- where's the witty Dumbledore explanation at the end?
