A few things to consider..
Chang is leaving, and the class she's teaching at Chinese School is looking for a new teacher. Upon her invitation, I went to sit in on the class today, took some notes, and talked to the principal a bit. An "interview" of sorts. Her class ... is difficult. There's about 3 kids who have a decent grasp of the Chinese language, and whose parents want them to learn more characters. There's about 3 kids who don't understand conversational Chinese, and whose parents are white. Then there's 3 kids who are in the middle, and have potential for more if I can get them to focus. But anyway, the question is whether I want to take up the class when Chang leaves. In a way, it's stirred something in me, and I really want to see if I can pull it off. But on the other hand, I'm slightly intimidated about dealing with parents, and I'm reminded in the interview with the principal of the general tediousness of dealing with Chinese Adults. Also, they want committedness, which means no study abroad, and being here until July and coming back beginning of Sept. So basically, it'd be a good challenge, especially here where they don't consider me "principal's daughter", but it's a lot of work and too much commitment.
Another issue is study abroad. I don't know if I'll get in or not. But if I do, then it's either a fall or winter quarter in Europe, which would KICK ASS. I'd have to start on visa stuff pretty soon, though, if I do get in. Money-wise is not a big problem, as it's about the same as me living here, although I'd probably have to talk to parents about plane fare and suchlike. Of course, downsides include not being here in the fall, which means no club stuff, no NSP (if I can still get in), subletting the apartment, and no Alexis/Kim/friends. Also, if there were any sequenced classes that I needed to get into first quarter, then I'd also be mildly screwed.
Which leads me to the third issue-- do I want to do a History/EALC double major? I used to think I'd like a PoliSci doule major with a focus on comparative cultures, but after taking a PoliSci class and sitting in on two others for the first few weeks, it's not really something I want to take 10 more classes for. On the other hand, I'm bound by my very nature to take more EALC classes. I think by the end of the next quarter, I would have taken 6 EALC courses and 6 HIST courses. However, EALC requires the East Asian Civ sequence and another year of language (that I can't get out of by testing). If I take European Civ abroad, I can still manage to take 2 quarters of EALC civ when I get back, and maybe test into Japanese 102. But then, the issue is if I really want to do this. I mean, I chose Islamic Civ on purpose. So is it worth 4-6 credits of East Asian Civ and Japanese to get myself a little note on the transcript that says "this person has also qualified for an EALC major"? Or is it better to use those 4-6 credits to take more interesting classes? (more history, maybe dabble in philosophy or sociology or econ)
Yeah, just thinking. I should declare my history major-ness soon, though
