Google frustrations

Is it just me, or has Google become crappier and crappier?

Some observations:

1) The new Gmail interface is NOT better. It's bland and it's clunky and mysterious. I'm still clinging on to the old interface, but it's been getting harder.

2) Did anyone notice that whereas before you can search "videos" on Google, now the primary way is searching "Youtube"? You have to go to the submenu to search videos

3) I upgraded to the latest Picasa before sorting my Peru photos, but when I go to upload, a few things happen:
(a) there's no longer any way of uploading any images smaller than 2048px unless your original image was smaller (I've always preferred 1000px or so).
(b) there's some fancy privacy thing that's linked to Google Plus, but which I can't set album-wide unless I first set it for a specific image?
(b) Google automatically makes a post for me on Google Plus?

4) Why must Google Plus be everywhere? What if I don't want to use Google+ ? Jono describes the social media websites as "holding your friends hostage". Well, Google, I already entrust you with my email, my documents, and my photos. I don't want to give my whole life to you. I don't want you to hold my friends hostage.

D:

I think it's time to seriously look for alternatives. But how do I get my information back?

Oh, BTW, Peru pictures are up:

I put some general pics first, followed mostly chronologically. There are also many many captions.
