Yesterday my mom and I had this big discussion about anime. She didn't understand the attraction of anime, so I tried to explain to her the best I could. Two key points came up during the discussion. First, one of the main reasons that anime is so attractive is because of its breadth of appeal. The storyline, the art, the fandom. The other point is that this is one of the ways to fill the gap between childhood and adulthood. In the past, 16-year-olds were getting married and living life as an adult. However, in our society, there is this additional time where our minds need to explore beyond academics and athletics; seek other forms of stimulus etc. Then in comes anime that has elements that appeal to everyone. (Of course, there's also The Formula, but that's part of the promotion of anime)
