Utena
Whoa, so I finished my Utena paper, right? Well, 3 hours late, but close enough. 16 pages of non-researched BS pulled out of my ass. Er... memory. Err... delusions. Here's my sorta-thesis sentence: "I will examine how Revolutionary Girl Utena uses the established tropes of the Shoujo genre, designed for episodic amusement for the female viewer, to present a process of crisis resolution through ritual, reality, and a redefinition of revolution."
Heh, reading it now, I'm like "wow, I really didn't write those sentences properly, eh?"
But anyway, so after I turned my paper in, I decided, "hey, let me actually *watch* the last 3 episodes!" So I did, and I was like "whoa, it's even *more* complicated than I remembered!" But oh well, the paper's officially turned in.
And then I noticed that this disc had director's commentary. Like, Ikuhara and Saito Chiho, so I was like "OMGZ!"
I highly recommend it for Utena fans who no longer plan to write papers on it. Papers are a lot more fun to write when you *don't* know what the director was intending. But on the other hand, Saito Chiho and Ikuhara are two differently funny people. As in, Saito Chiho has these very funny reminesces, and Ikuhara BSes hilariously. Highlights include:
1) SC: What did we decide was the symbolism behind the roses?
IK: Rose symbolism, eh?
SC: We must have had something
IK: Uh... we did?
SC: Why else would they be at every corner?
IK: hmm... I guess you have a point...
2) SC: So when we first started we wanted this to be something elementary school students can enjoy.
IK: Oh yeah
SC: But then it started changing when I wasn't noticing.
SC: And soon Ikuhara was coming to me saying "Saito-san, we kind of changed a few things, I hope you don't mind"
SC: And he kept on doing that, leaving me to wonder whether he's decided not to make a profit from this series...
3) IK: I'm sure everything had some symbolism, but I really don't remember...
[Sushu: ::headdesk::]
4) SC: The designs were hard. Ikuhara didn't want it to look Sci-Fi. No Sci-Fi and no Fantasy, he said, so I just based it off of simple military uniforms
SC: Then he kept asking me, "Can you show where her breasts are?" "Can you show the butt more?"
SC: And he was very particular about having the buttons exactly on the breasts.
SC: I learned a lot from this experience.
5) IK: If I were to do it again, I would have used guns instead of swords
IK: Swords are hard to animate, and hard to do creative choreography with.
IK: You need a good animator to draw the swing of the arm, whereas you just have to hold a gun. *I* can animate guns.
IK: Yeah, definitely guns next time.
6) SC: So I asked him "why do you have Akio jumping onto the hood of a car with his shirt off?" And he said "it's to show he's an adult"
IK: You know how in magazines you always see successful people posing next to their car? Success -> Jaguar. Jaguar->Success
IK: So I wanted to show Akio with his car, loving his car, bonding with his car... so he takes his shirt off.
SC: -.-;;
7) IK: At first I tried to stay away from the Rose of Versailles stuff. I really didn't want it to be a parody. [rantrant]
IK: But then one day I had this epiphany. What I actually wanted to do was combine all of the shoujo anime into one. So it *needs* to parody *everything.* [rantrant]
8) [about the Utena movie] IK: you know how people name their cars after their girlfriend?
SC/Interviewer: No....
IK: Well, I name my cars after girls, like Rachel, or Caroline...
SC: ... you do...?
9) [when watching credits] SC: oh! I missed my name!
SC: I get this feeling of awe when I see my name on this
SC: Especially since I come right after Chu-Chu. Chu-chu, me. Me, Chu-chu
IK: You've watched this often enough to know the order?
[as the credits roll to an end]
IK: Wait, where's my name? Am I not on this?
