One last MUNUC post...

I was writing this in response to [livejournal.com profile] philena's queries, but then I realized that hey, this was what I was gonna write anyway, so here it is... the details.

I was the info person for the UN Committee on Human Rights. So, a bunch of countries in Africa and South America, really. The two topics were mercenaries and structural adjustment. I actually didn't get a lot to do, cause there were only a few HGMs per session, so I spent some time answering other people's, and writing expert speeches. I only gave 1 expert speech. It was on Shanghai urban renewal. It was in English, but it was lots of fun, cause people asked me questions and I was like "yo, I've been there". :D

Joanne was the info person for European Union. But what's cool was that she was running a crisis. These Transdniestrians in Moldova did a bunch of terrorist activities, like bombing gas lines and stuff. She got these radio addresses that she got a British guy to record. She got lots of press releases, and she had crazy expert speeches planned: a neo-nazi speaking in German, a human trafficker (with ho), a Romanian/Russian debate, French people complaining about the heat... But the problem was, the kids in the EU committee just didn't get it. She wanted to show that transnational terrorism came from an infrastracture of neglect of the poor. So she was hitting them with Neo-nazis and human traffickers and discontent minorities, hoping that they'd talk about some long term reforms. Instead, they just wanted to get the crisis over with by dealing with stuff piecemeal.

There were three daytime crises and two night-time crises. The daytime crises were all a bit unsatisfactory for the crisis directors, because the students are a bit weak, and need prodding to remember their positions. So the North Korea nuclear bomb one... for a while, everyone was just calling for war. And the Africa one... for a while, everyone was just working together and calling for war. And the EU one... everyone just wanted to send in peace-keeping troops.

The night-time crises involve the Security Council (SC) and the Historical Security Council (HSC). The HSC is set in 1962 this year. Basically, everyone there has to pretend that they're in 1962, which is really cool. So night-time crises is when you wake up the members of the SC and the HSC at like, 2 in the morning, hustle them down and make them solve crises. We sit in a room right next to them, and we set up a secret microphone feed so that we can hear whatever's going on in their room. We also have a video camera setup so that you can do live news feeds and stuff. Everyone has to be very quiet because they're right next door. And then we sneak out for food and caffeine.
This year, though, the crises didn't generate a lot of work. Usually half of Info stays up, and there's lots of news feeds and expert speakers and stuff, and it drags on until, like 9am. But this year, it was done in 4 hours. I mean, it was cool becauses the SC and HSC kids are much stronger and generally stay on position, but for some reason, this year didn't give those of us who stayed up a lot of work to do. So I guess if you live for the crises, this year's were a bit lackluster. It was still fun, though. :D
