Suddenly I am overcome by the good anime I've seen this year so far...

- Giant Robo, which is operatic in storyline, execution and score. It is an epic exaltation of spiritual triumph through Wagner-esque manipulations of music and plot and totally kickass characters, where you really can't help but laugh and cry and love.
- Ima soko ni iru boku, which is quite honest about a great deal of things, where children are important but not sacred, where madness is chillingly functional, where the good guys don't exactly lose but don't exactly win, either, and is really touching in its earnesty
- Rose of Versailles, which truly transcends the anime form in its story and yet is perhaps best executed as anime (which is best for the combination of realism and fantasy.) The history, the drama, the flamboyantly subdued angst!
